Thursday Doors August 10: The Local Scene

Scroll down to content

My local digs are suburban Philadelphia – specifically, and on this day of wandering around, West Chester. It’s an historic borough about 30 miles outside of Philadelphia, the actual town incorporated in the late 1700’s. Though, much of its earlier foundational history of the 1600’s and earlier is quite interesting as well.

While not all of what I’ve shot for this post is “historic” (though that’s subjective, right?) some of what I captured was built back in the late 18th century, with more in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. The actual center 4 blocks of town, where most of the original buildings are located, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

As it goes for historical places, the architecture in West Chester is a knock out. For having lived in and around this part of the state, I still stumble upon something new pretty often. Or something I’d just perhaps not taken the time to look at. Fortunately West Chester is a walk-able town, and this was a day I walked, and wasn’t on my usual harried way driving through.

As to architectural style, most of West Chester consists of late Victorian, mid and late 19th century revival styles. Mixed in are more grandiose buildings with Romanesque, Georgian and Greek revival styles. I’ll have to save some of those for another day’s post 🙂

For this week’s doors challenge.
